The cracks of twigs and hands to birch to brush the leaves upon us the scruff of dirt and squish of mud we built our own adventure found a creek and built a bridge to cross the creek in summer at winters end the water flowed and tore the bridge from both shores the season’s change friends rearrange to tell the paths apart the hideout code yelled from the road will let you in the park We climbed a hill to build a fort the hill became a castle at summer’s end we lost our walls the leaves all fell and crumbled in autumn’s wind, we huddled close and spoke in silly accents we ran in fields shouting shots til we were were warm and panting

about

Every instrument that we recorded, every piece of wiring, everything we used to make this possible is on the front cover (photographed in the room, on the bed, where it was recorded) and we made a pact to only record in mono, using an SM57 for every instrument. So while there are overdubs, everything is coming to the listener through one microphone. Pretty neat.

The pink kerchief was used as a pop-screen so our B's and P's and windy S's didn't explode your ears. The pop screen was being used in The Living End (Studio B, shall we say) at the time. When I say Studio A and Studio B, It's a joke: Just two different rooms in the same house.

Sometimes you can hear the people in the other rooms of the house, as we were recording at all hours with friends around outside the little doorway.

Julia and I wrote our lyrics apart from one another for the most part and she put the musical ideas we recored in Garageband onto her cellphone to carry with her. We brought them together and brainstormed most of the choruses to bridge the two ideas together for each song. Honeybooks is about being alone with your imagination and that inner working space, even when you are with someone else; There's something so important to me about late nights by myself working on something creative and exploratory, twiddling dials and moving microphones around is the same feeling as getting lost in a book for 4 or 5 hours. Cold House (On The DL) is an ode to my favourite little house on Bay Street. Eternally cold from pure stubbornness.

We hope you enjoy!
