The cracks of twigs and hands to birch
to brush the leaves upon us
the scruff of dirt and squish of mud
we built our own adventure
found a creek and built a bridge
to cross the creek in summer
at winters end the water flowed
and tore the bridge from both shores
the season’s change
friends rearrange
to tell the paths apart
the hideout code
yelled from the road
will let you in the park
We climbed a hill to build a fort
the hill became a castle
at summer’s end we lost our walls
the leaves all fell and crumbled
in autumn’s wind, we huddled close
and spoke in silly accents
we ran in fields shouting shots
til we were were warm and panting
